David Swensen Memorial

David did live his own impossible dream—and in doing so, he made all of Yale’s dreams more possible. This is what I will remember of my friend David Swensen, an extraordinary and beloved citizen of Yale, and this is his legacy.

Over the years, when David was asked to share his secrets of successful investing, he would answer: “There are three main priorities-- First, it’s about the people. Second, it’s about the people. And third, it’s about the people. Just like life!” David was fascinated with people—he wanted to learn about them, hear their stories, understand what shaped them and motivated them, inspired them and challenged them. He wanted to know about their aspirations and their families.

If you ever sat across from David as he asked his questions, you knew that he was all in, completely engaged-- he was focused on you. And from that place, across from David and his endless curiosity, and his heart as big as Wisconsin, memories were formed, friendships blossomed, lives were changed for the better. It’s our hope that you will share on our platform your stories, recollections, photos and videos of time spent with David. What more fitting tribute for the man who valued relationships above all else, and who, all his life, reveled in the joy of moving through a world of friends.
